DNA damage may contribute to cell death caused by the sphingomyelinase D (SMase D), the main toxin from Loxosceles spider venom. Based on our previous experience in models of DNA damage, it was possible to demonstrate that SMase D induces DNA break and that this damage is dependent on superoxide production.
